Logo Research

Here a some examples of titles I like. I am hoping to get a mixture between a retro fifties look and a science program.

These old Hanna-Barbera titles are great. Really iconic.

The text on the logo for the Honeymooners just screams fifties.

This looks really scientific.

New Research

I met today with a sound design student called Jason Hodder who indeed was very helpful and kindley agreed to sound design the film. Now I just need to find music that is appropiate for the film for him to use.

I found this. Upon watching this I released that "Watch Mr. Wizard" is what my film is based on. This episode is from 1951. The theme is sort of what I'm looking for, maybe it needs to be a bit bigger. Enjoy!

James suggested the theme from this show Mystery Science Theatre.

I was also thinking of something like Home Improvement

Al suggested theme tunes such as "Whose line is it anyway" or just a hoedown. I found this, it's the theme from the UK version of "The Price is Right" from 1984.

New Ideas and Youtube Research

I was just thinking that maybe I shouldn't start with him walking in, but start it with him in like a comfy Professor chair, like Ludwig Von drake has, and have a whole bunch of diplomas, awards and pictures behind him to show that he is a very credible scientist. Something to think about.

Here are some clips from Home Improvement to give you a general idea.

I wanted to find an example of the announcer introducing Tool Time, but all I could find was it in this foreign language.

Re-worked Story Idea

Here is the new rough storyboard thumbnails. As previously mentioned, the three things I got from David Bull's suggestions was

a) to set up that he is a credible scientist
b) to set up that he's read up all about dentistry but has never actually done it before and
c) that it was a live t.v. show.

I was struggling with this until my brother Lewis suggested that I open it like a live t.v show with an announcer and titles. And Susie now gets used, great. Then all I had to do was mention that he has witnessed many procedures in the past at college and that this was his first. Certain dialogue may need to be tweak and camera angles sorted out, but I'm happy.

Character Research

I decided that I wanted a wide variety of characters in my informational film. I first wanted a Professor of some kind, one whose is intelligent and knowledge but also is so easily excited and curious about everything. I was thinking of prof Ludwig Von Drake, Doc Hunnydew and the Doc from Back to the Future.

I wanted a dumb lovable kind of guy that could act as the everyman, and of course I thought of Goofy.

I wanted a computer assistant who is equally as capable and who has a nature to commenting on the Professor's actions and I thought of Al from Home Improvement.

I wanted to have a wife for the Professor. She is suffering but loves him dearly. I thought of Betty from the Flintstones.
